KATE COURTNEY SUCCEEDED AT VYSOČINA ARENA
Kate Courtney, the rainbow-jersey-wearing racer from the USA, took the victory in a Women's Elite race with a very dramatic course
and repeated her triumph in Albstadt from last week. Spectators watching the six-lap-long race had to wait for its climax until the
very last lap when the leader, Anne Tauber of the Netherlands, rode ahead of Courtney. However, Tauber, who was leading the race
for the whole time, made a mistake that she was dealing with for a long time, and similarly to Albstadt, she lost a medal that was basically
in the palm of her hand already. "I know how to ride a bike, but I do not know how to win," the sad hero of the day said.
On the contrary, Sunday was a perfect day for the other two medalists. The track in Nové Město brought the best result in World Cup
series to both Rebecca McConnell (AUS), who took the silver, and Haley Smith (CAN) who finished third. And it was the very first
podium for Haley!
Twenty-three-year-old current world champion Kate is currently in the lead of the World Cup ranking: with 700 points, she is 210 points
ahead of Jolanda Neff of Switzerland.
Czech riders - Karla Štěpánová and Jitka Čábelická - finished 22nd and 23rd.
"Today, I did not ride well at all, both uphill and downhill. I started to sieve through the peloton after the first lap, and honestly,
I am glad I did not end up on an even worse position," Čábelická, who is the current Czech champion, said after the race.
"Great atmosphere, amazing fans, it is a marvellous experience to race in Nové Město. I started in the sixth row, and had to stay calm
after the start so that I would not ride too hard in the first hill. I tried to move ahead and gained mainly in technical sections. I am
quite satisfied with the result."
